Intuitive business is about flow. How to work with yin, yang, and soul.

If you read my page or engage my work in any form, it may seem natural for you to draw the conclusion that I am anti-traditional business.

That I don’t believe in crunching numbers, using data, or working with industry patterns to establish strategies that will perform. Some people interpret the intuitive nature of my approach as an aversion to logistics. An aversion to details. An aversion to making plans and getting things done.

That couldn’t be further away from the truth.

Intuitive Business is the art, practice, philosophy, and strategy that emerges naturally when we give ourselves the time, space, and resources to come back into alignment .

It is not anti-marketing, anti-sales, anti-responsibilities, anti-putting-money-away-for-taxes, or anti-boundaries.

It is all those things — just with soul.
With pleasure.
With fulfillment.
And with ease.

Intuitive Business is a full-bodied attempt to bring balance and harmony to an imbalanced ecosystem.

Think of it like yin and yang.

And in the current entrepreneurial landscape, yang dominates.
There’s hardly no space for yin.

If you’re not familiar with yin and yang, it’s a concept I first learned of in Indigenous Taoist philosophy. If you’re looking for somewhere to dive deeper into this cosmology, I highly recommend the work of benebell wen. She has become my sort of online teacher over the years.

If you are familiar, and/or, once you are familiar, check out this list of yin and yang attributes I made. I couldn’t find a list anywhere that was comprehensive and dynamic enough to reflect how I experience the two energies. Alas:

The whole (simplified) idea behind yin and yang is that these two energies are dependent on one another. They create the other. They rely on one another. And they are present in every single cosmic ecosystem. Including your business and our greater world.

The purpose of understanding yin and yang, as I have grown to understand it (as, and let me own this, a European American person who is way outside of the direct Chinese cosmology lineages; I’m a total visitor here, studying with great reverence and respect) is not to dominate or to control our energies, but to get into flow with our energies. To bring more balance where these energies already exist.

This is what traditional business misses.

In traditional business, yang exists in excess, while yin is deficient.

And so — we can work with this observation to bring more harmony, prosperity, peace, and abundance to our business lives.

Take a moment, if you’re feeling frisky, and make a list of daily activities you carry out for your business — or that you think about when you think about business.
How many of them fall in the category of yin?
What about the category of yang?

I’m willing to bet you do a lot of sitting at your computer, trying to force things to happen, perfecting your website and language, agonizing over why things aren’t happening in a way you can predict, “networking” in a forced and inauthentic way. (Yang)

I bet you spend much less time resting into that uncertainty, taking a walk through nature on your lunch break, trusting in the forces bigger than you that are one of the primary reasons your business even exists, doing creative art projects, and smiling at people you pass on the street. (Yin)

But you need an equal balance of both.

It bears repeating:

That’s why, in my practice, we don’t neglect the yang of it all — but we are also focused on making space for yin. Because that’s where the imbalance exists. And we are working to restore harmony within that imbalance. Which will ultimately bring you the entrepreneurial experience you truly seek.

A few examples of how yin and yang work together:

My clients and I often follow the general industry guidelines for creating a fully functioning, magnetic website.

But within that website, we also make sure there’s space for their profound inner essence to shine through. And we make sure the users’ experience is one of warmth and ease. Ease. Yin, and this is also worth repeating, is about ease.

Or, when developing marketing and sales strategies, we develop them considering best-practice knowledge that already exists — but we don’t leave it at logic, intellect, or predictability alone. We leave plenty of space for the shimmering, the miraculous, mysterious, beautiful, and effervescent quality of life— it is just as important that it shines through.

Intuitive Business is where you turn when you are unwilling — or increasingly more common, literally physically and spiritually unable — to continue with business as it is.

Intuitive Business helps you create different conditions. Conditions that are great for you and great for your clients. Conditions that reflect a more liberated, whole world.

Intuitive Business exists to address is our dominant culture’s obsession with yang — with form, with advancement, with action — at the expense of the soft.

That obsession often comes at the expense of people for whom it is natural to honor the yin of existence. Women, queer people, femmes, Black folks, Indigenous folks, and more.

People who know the power of tenderness, culture, beauty, and care..

Without a business landscape — an economy — or a market — that is balanced and harmonious in yin and yang — only certain types of people can succeed, doing only certain types of things.

In today’s landscape, that’s typically cis, straight white men with no tattoos and an inclination towards greed, succeeding at things like fracking/pillaging the Earth, enslaving low wage workers in factories, and stealing resources from the global South.

See how this creates a sense of energetic injustice?
Which also translates to economic injustice? Racial injustice? Disability injustice? Gender injustice? And more?

The current state of business worldwide is absolutely a result of imbalanced yang.

Our businesses should be equal parts form and formless, equal parts yin and yang.

If there IS imbalance — you, as a business owner, should have clarity on why the imbalance is occurring, with receptivity and strategy to how the entire ecosystem might like to restore.

The truth is, my work with clients sometimes requires an advancing, measurable form. Sometimes, it also requires a level of yielding and retreating. Do you hae the capacity for both?

There is never a right or wrong answer — and there is never the encouragement to be “anti” anything. Including traditional business, money, marketing, or accumulating wealth.

The encouragement is to be fully present with every radiant iota of essence that makes up your business ecosystem.

The point of business is the same point of life.

On the intuitive business path, it is harmony and balance we seek. Not validation. Not certainty. Not the immediate fulfillment of demands and requests.

We steady ourselves, we become wiser, and we release our entitlement to a Universe that works only in ways we can logically conceive. We co-create a new sort of spiritual, economic, love politic that serves us and others for generations to come.
