Business is a feeling. Welcome to the“Business Is” philosophy series.
More than anything, business is a feeling.
That means, in its purest, most potent essence, it is a surge of energy powering through you.
When people say “I’m in business!” they usually mean they made their first sale, got their storefront set up, or finally launched their website.
But none of those are actually signs that you are in business.
Only your internal state is.
Business is a feeling. In the sense that every beautiful (and not so beautiful) thing we set into motion during the course of our human experience emerges first from an inner sensation. When you’re sad, do you sometimes go grab a pint of ice cream or cozy up in your safe space for a good cry? When you’re happy, do you sometimes paint a picture, smile extra big at your kid, or go for a meditative walk? When you’re mad, do you sometimes isolate yourself from family and friends, lose your temper, or send a strongly worded email that a more grounded you wouldn’t have sent?
Why would business work any different?
In some ways, this can become a what came first — the chicken or the egg — phenomenon. Are our feelings the initiators of how we are inspired to move in the world? Or is the world — including our histories, our relationships, and society at large — the ultimate initiator — because it is so often what our feelings emerge in response to? Where is the beginning? Where is the end?
We don’t know.
That’s the point.
Feelings are illusive, un-knowable things. We can experience them, we can hypothesize about them, but we can’t logic our way out of them. We can understand them, or think we understand them, but we can’t know them — not really.
One popular definition of feelings = emotion, or, energy in motion.
Feelings are just energy in motion. I like this definition because it helps us separate the energy moving through us from who we really are. Sometimes, this is a crucial and necessary and helpful separation. Sometimes, it’s not.
When we get really present with our emotional energy, we can notice that energy contains crucial data.
What are we at peace with? What are we disturbed by? What do we need more or less of?
Energy is data.
And business is about data
But not the type of data we usually think about when we think about data.
Sure, sales charts matter, how many people open our emails matter, our debt to income ration matters, the dollar amount of our income and whether it is increasing or decreasing matters.
But what do you think all of that starts as?
Energy.
Inside.
Now — once that energy is alive and moving outside of us, it comes into contact with other energies that may attempt to shape, guide, or deform it.
Energies like systemic oppression, capitalism, abuse, and violence.
These sort of imposed energetic systems that are literally in place to dim our energetic shine.
In the world today, it is common that once our beautiful, creative energy leaves our body, it becomes sort of tainted, diluted, or impacted, in some way, by dominant forces. But that doesn’t mean we’ve failed. And it doesn’t mean we can’t still win. It doesn’t mean we aren’t winning. It just means our energy has been impacted. It just means we need to understand that impact and recognize the immense power we still have, even in the midst of it.
Business is an extension of your power. Which means your business is something the world will always try to limit, repress, and control.
In Intuitive Business, we learn how to not let it. Intuitive Business is both protective and generative at its core.
Before your business was a business, it was a feeling.
Do you remember it?
Take a moment and see if you can locate that feeling in your body today.
What made you take that first step — whether it was setting up a website, mapping out a dream plan, allowing yourself to vision, buying an entrepreneurial book, recruiting a business partner, or hiring me?
It wasn’t as simple as you’re destined to be a business owner, and now’s just the time (although I also absolutely 100% believe that to be true).
It was something more complex, like an amalgamation of the curiosities, concerns, and commitments you’ve developed about humanity, about existence, about yourself over the last many years, converging into a tangible form that you could share to help others.
Helping others: Can you remember what makes you want to do that?
Business is a natural consequence of both hope and hopelessness. Business is what happens when you believe things can be different, and also understand that things absolutely won’t become different if you keep everything as it is.
Business is then a sensation that brings slight discomfort for all of us, as we realize it is less and less about pie charts, growth graphs, and how many emails we send and more about reconciling an irreconcilable tension within.
Business is a feeling.
When you’re in business, your body can tell.
You feel energized, naturally sourced, and impactful.
When you’re out of business, your body can also tell.
You’ll feel drab, depressed, and misaligned.
The source of business is the same source that predicates how you move through the world.
Let that sink in.

This is a part of my “Business Is” series, where I philosophize on what business is from a wide range of non-traditional and expansive perspectives, aimed to help you approach your business in creative ways. When we shift our relationship to a thing, the thing itself often shifts, and it is my hope that something in this archive can help facilitate that kind of shift for you.
Working with a coach (cough cough, me) to dive deep into these explorations is one phenomenal way to revolutionize your relationship to your business (and thus — revolutionize your business, itself), but it is not the only way.
Another way is by reading, by studying, by seeking out openings, and by allowing yourself the time and space to consider alternate pathways.
By simply engaging this content, you give yourself the truly invaluable opportunity to start anew.
