Who Needs A Business Coach Anyways? (Hint: Probably you)
Funny story — I didn’t know I was a Business Coach until someone told me. Seriously.
By that point, I’d spent almost 7 years helping marginalized people grow resourcing models that truly worked for them…which almost always involved figuring out how to fund their lives.
I didn’t resonate with the word “business” — nor did I really even resonate with the term “coach,” — but I knew I cared deeply about making sure people like me could live robust, abundant, truly prosperous lives that didn’t cost them their integrity, their values, or their souls.
Who are people like me?
People like me are people who don’t easily see themselves reflected in business. We have to work a little harder to feel represented, and all mainstream entrepreneurial advice we receive has to go through a kind of shape-shifting process until it adequately meets us and our needs.
We are queer, expansive, spiritual, femme, Black, Brown, and people of the global majority healers, creatives, and leaders who care about what happens next. We know the value of money and we also know the value of a world where everyone has what they need to thrive.
We want what is best for our families, for our communities, and for all of our living and non-living siblings. We want what is best for ourselves.
And yet, we spend most of our lives laboring for causes we don’t believe in, inside corporations that support bigotry, war, and genocide — or even organizations that claim to care but still don’t know how to show up in right relationship. This sort of misalignment wears down our bodies, hearts, spirits, and minds.
In order to exist in these spaces — which include but aren’t limited to academia, non-profits, agencies, clinics, businesses, and organizations of all sizes — we have to shrink ourselves. Perhaps more accurately — we have to completely disappear.
Something disturbing happens to us when we aren’t able to spend our days and nights engaged in work we love.
And by work, I don’t necessarily mean a list of job responsibilities, tasks, and duties another person assigns you — but a series of inspired and inspiring actions that emerge from your soul. In my practice, I encourage clients to think about “work” as a sort of divine assignment, bestowed upon you by your own spirit, supported and encouraged by all life. In my work with clients, we always start our work from that place then, build backwards for holistic wealth and abundance from there.
Maybe you already feel completely abundant because you generally LIKE the work you do, and for the most part, are ALREADY making great money — in that case, good on you!
But if you haven’t done the preliminary spiritual, energetic, and even practical work of connecting every moment you spend on Earth with a greater purpose, chances are, the texture of your abundance is flat, and the vibration of your money is low. The quality of your money matters because money is a representation, an extension, and a symbol of love. How you earn, spend, save, invest, and give matters. Your energetic financial ecosystem determines how at peace your soul gets to be while on this Earth.
If I’ve gotten a little too “woo” for you, let me bring us back down to reality and say this:
You probably need a business coach, even if you don’t think you do.
Just like I was a business coach, even before I realized I was one.
We all need a business coach because at its core essence, business is the sacred, ancient art of exchanging with other life forms in a way that increases our shared capacity for love. In our current conditions, our job is to create a new economy of exchange rooted in every beings’ value, dignity, and worth.
And this is work we all do each day — whether we are conscious of it or not. When we become more conscious of it, we have more agency. We can bring healing to our communal soul.
Not everyone is called to take this aspect of their lives seriously. But if you’re up late at night plagued by the state of the world, wondering what you can do to change things while still providing for your family, investing in the future, and paying your bills, there’s a strong chance that working with a business coach is the next, best right step for you.
Working with a business coach, even when you’re not sure you need to, unlocks pathways of healing and liberation you never could have imagined before. Working with a business coach allows you to take stock of some of the most overlooked, neglected aspects of your life — like your finances, your purpose, your time/energy/labor, and your commitment to others — in new and innovative ways.
Work touches all of us. How we work and what we work for creates the foundation of our entire lives. It even shapes the lives of our children and has the potential to send more healing - or harm - back to future generations.
Working with a business coach, especially during systems collapse, matters.
I didn’t recognize myself as a business coach because I didn’t think business was for me.
I hadn’t gone to an Ivy League business school and I wasn’t a millionaire. I wasn’t a cis straight white man. I had degrees in Women’s and Gender Studies, Pan African Studies, Social Change, and Counseling. All I knew about entrepreneurship I learned from financial and spiritual witches, political and philosophical books on racial capitalism, and also, the best business man I know: my dad.
But it turns out, that’s exactly what qualifies me to support others on this path.
